Doncaster Rovers celebrate their promotion into the League Championship

If asked the question “Which is the most successful club of the last decade or, even still, the last five years?” what would your answer be? If you say Doncaster Rovers, you’d have a great argument for why it’s true.

This once-dismal side has been thrice promoted in the last five years with the most recent their move up to the Championship. Now only one step away from the top-flight, it’s a testament to their management and the club’s resolve that they’ve come this far in so short a span.

Leeds continues to be the butt of English football’s long-running joke. They were the side that fell to Doncaster, a club so far below Leeds in the historical pecking order that it’s hard to call them local rivals. But Leeds will remain in League One and continue to pay their penance as a once-storied club now shrouded in shame. Doncaster’s James Hayter scored the clincher that promoted his side and kept Leeds in the third tier. However, despite Leeds’ remainder in League One, they appear to have stopped their skid. Without a fire-sale in the off-season, they will surely continue to be the league’s top draw while again challenging for promotion to the Championship.
