Euro ’08: Day Five
Day Five of the Euros features two undefeated teams (Portugal vs. Czech Republic) from Group A going at it at 11:55 a.m. ET, followed by Turkey tangling with the Swiss at 2:45 p.m. ET.
The Portugal-Czech Republic game promises to offer lots of skill and speed on both sides. The top spot in the group is at stake as Manchester United pretty boy/scorer Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to spearhead Portugalâs offense, while the Czechâs will have to work as a unit in order to conquer their opponents. Whatever team gets the win will earn a berth to the knock-out round.
As for the Turkey-Switzerland match, the co-hosts need to win (as do the Turks) in order to stay alive at this tournament. Both sides are coming off a loss — and another defeat will spell elimination. I expect a gritty performance given whatâs at stake and the Swiss — aided by an enthusiastic home crowd — could come up on top.
As for Greeceâs 2-0 loss to Sweden on Tuesday, the defending European champs will probably not repeat. They were long-shots four years ago and in a group which also features Spain and Russia, Greece will need to do more offensively.
