MIAMI – Marvin Washington didn’t even dare dream these dreams while he toiled for eight seasons with the Jets.
But here he was, dressed in a suit with sweat beading on his forehead as he walked out of Pro Player Stadium after last night’s Super Bowl XXXIII as a champion for the first time in his football life.
“This is unbelievable,” Washington said, using the word “unbelievable” in every other sentence. “This is what I’ve worked all my life for. I feel like I’ve come a long way. For all the work, all the rehabbing from injuries, this is the fruit. I’m savoring the fruits of my labor.”
Washington, who signed as a free agent with the Broncos before this season and had one tackle last night, was also savoring the moment for all his friends in the league who’ve never tasted what he was digesting last night.
“I’ve been thinking about guys like (former 13-year Jet LB) Kyle Clifton, who played all those years and never got to feel this feeling,” Washington said. “I wish everyone could feel this feeling.
“This is for all the old Jet guys who I played with and who never got the chance to have this,” Washington went on. “I want them to feel a part of this. They’re the ones who got me here. They taught me to be a professional.”
Washington played in one playoff game in his eight seasons as a Jet.
“This is just an unbelievable experience,” he said. “I’ve never won in high school or college. I’ve never been on a championship team. I’ve never won the last game of a season.
“This is for all the guys I played with who’ve never been here. I hope they feel a part of it.”
