The New York route to the Kentucky Derby begins today at Aqueduct with the Count Fleet Stakes for 3-year-olds.

Most years the Count Fleet is won by an inner dirt track specialist who rarely makes a dent in the Triple Crown, but this running could be an exception because the mile and 70-yard race lured one of 1998’s top juveniles, Prime Directive.
