NET NOTES For several days toward the end of the lockout, Jayson Williams and Patrick Ewing were an item. Williams called for a players’ vote. Ewing called for a muzzle for Williams. It made life interesting, more so than talk of escrow plans.

But there is no feud, Williams insists, so don’t look for any blood-letting – at least anything beyond the usual – when the two match up in pre-season games Wednesday and Friday.

“Me and Patrick go way back. Like rocking chairs,” Williams said after the Nets’ morning practice yesterday. “We talked about it and joked about it after. Patrick was tired of going to those damn meetings anyway.

“I give Patrick all the credit [for the deal],” Williams added. “He put in 300 hours and then here comes me with my big mouth. Patrick and I are friends. That doesn’t mean we won’t go at it hard. Patrick is one of the 50 best players in the world. Ever. I’m just Jayson.” *

Kendall Gill yesterday received seven stitches under his right eye following a blow from Jim McIlvaine on a drive down the lane. Friday night, McIlvaine raised some eyebrows when he blocked a drive by Keith Van Horn. “We pretty much know who the crazy men are: the 7-foot light-skinned guys,” Williams said. “You go in there, you get your [butt] whupped.;;

Coach John Calipari said all players are either a little behind in conditioning or a little off in their “basketball feel,” but he admits he is more than pleased overall. Yesterday, he singled out two guys for special mention: Kerry Kittles and Rony Seikaly. “Rony is playing very playing well. And Kerry Kittles has been fabulous,” Calipari said, noting, “actually, no one has been bad.”

Calipari also has been impressed with former North Carolina and Sacramento 7-footer Kevin Salvadori … McIlvaine on why he can block shots so effectively: “Well, I’m tall.” *

Calipari said he can envision Seikaly and Williams playing together.

“Rony is a scoring post player and Jayson is an offensive rebounder post player so one can score and one can lift and they can play off each other perfectly,” Calipari said. “Rony can also shoot a 15-footer so if we put Jayson on pick-and-rolls and he runs to the rim, Rony can stay out on the floor and shoot. And he can make them. So they can play together, there’s no question.” *

With a $100.1 million contract in his pocket, Williams said he has not been hit for loans. But two teammates, Lucious Harris and Van Horn, asked for an expensive purchase.

“They asked me to buy them a plane yesterday. Lucious Harris and the Pale Rider,” Williams said. “They said, ‘Can we get a new plane?’ And they were serious. I said, ‘Nah, it’ll be cheaper to take you out to dinner about 10 times.”
