Altidore Unveiled
By BRIAN LEWIS
U.S. forward Jozy Altidoreâs $10 million transfer to Villarreal is all but done, with the 18-year-old having agreed to terms on a six-year contract with the club yesterday. After passing a physical, heâs expected to ink the deal and be unveiled at a press conference later today.
And if youâre wondering how seriously the runnersup in la Liga are taking the acquisition of the former Red Bull striker, they made him the headliner on their website.
The Livingston, NJ-born star makes the move official July 1 when the European transfer window opens. Heâs expected to be loaned to a smaller La Liga club next season, probably Recreativo Huelva but Friday we told you Real Valladolid is a possibility as well.So what does this mean for Red Bull?
At the moment, the bulk of their 2/3rds of the transfer fee will be held by MLS for awhile, until they start using it for âsoccer purposesââ like a training center, youth academy of a Designated Player next year. But theyâll have 500,000 to spend and Juan Carlos Osorio left on a scouting mission from Friday-Tuesday, returning today.
Presumably he was shopping like it was Paramus at Christmas. He wanted a left-footed defender, a central midfielder and a left-winger. The latter should be Jorge âZurdoââ Rojas, who some of you saw start at left wing and help Venezuela beat Brazil 2-0 at Gillette Stadium. Thatâs getting closer and closer; letâs see what Osorio and Jeff Agoos get done.
Chime in with your thoughts?
