Another Kentucky Derby contender may be out before the gates even fly open.
A day after betting favorite Omaha Beach was scratched with an illness, Haikal became questionable with an abscess in his left front hoof, the Courier-Journal reported.
Haikal, who was supposed to start next to Omaha Beach in the No. 11 post position, currently has 30-to-1 odds but may not be able to run in Saturday’s first leg of the Triple Crown.
“It’s going to be a quick fix, but I don’t know if it’s going to be quick enough,” trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said, per the Courier-Journal. “He has to train for us to be comfortable with him. … If he’s still sore, he won’t be.”
The horse did not train Thursday, but his status should be clear by 9 a.m. Friday, the final deadline for scratches.
Bodexpress replaced Omaha Beach in the field, but if Haikal cannot go, there is no second alternative, meaning the field would be slimmed down to 18 horses.
