The press release carrying the stunning news that Ch. 11 sportscaster Sean Kimerling had died yesterday at age 37 of complications from testicular cancer, noted that he was extremely popular with his co-workers.

It would be impossible to believe otherwise, as impossible to believe as his passing.

Kimerling was a sweetheart, as gentle and as unassuming and as considerate a soul as you’d meet in any walk of any life.

He was in my house, just a few months ago, doing a piece for Ch. 11 on LeBron James. Before and after the interview, he couldn’t stop thanking me for my time. And we spoke about golf, family, his college days at Georgetown, then grad school at Southern Cal, his growing up in Westchester.

But most striking was that he didn’t big-time his cameraman. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but it is. Some of the nicest people I’ve met in the TV business are in the nasty habit of talking down to their crews. Kimerling was grateful for the cameraman’s time, too.

Kimerling, with Ch. 11 for the last six years and more recently the on-site reporter within Ch. 11’s home Mets’ telecasts, leaves his parents, a brother and a sister – and a lot of sorrow-filled folks whose pleasure it was to know him.
