LEAFS LAND NIEUWENDYK
Free agent Joe Nieuwendyk agreed to terms last night with the Maple Leafs, ending his year-plus with the Devils.
Nieuwendyk, 37 today, agreed to a one-year deal with Toronto, where he will seek to become the first player to win Stanley Cups with four different teams. Nieuwendyk came to the Devils from Dallas in March 2002 with Jamie Langenbrunner for Jason Arnott and Randy McKay and a first-round pick.
He played 80 games for the Devils last season, notching his 500th goal, 500th assist and 1,000th point before becoming the sixth player in NHL history to win Cups with three different teams. He played 17 games in the playoffs but sat out the Finals with a torn oblique muscle.
