Dear Jim,
To prevent MSG from sliding into eternal irrelevancy, The Memo has some free advice. MSG Network needs to become a powerhouse reporting and opinion-based operation.
Next year, with the Mets following the Yankees in starting their own network, you will have no baseball. If you are going to succeed, you must develop strong, local, must-watch personalities.
You should model one show after ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption. A local version with an engaging tandem could be a winner. You should look to invest in breaking news to help make the well-produced SportsDesk more of a must-watch. Plus, you should take the handcuffs off your broadcasters whenever they discuss the Knicks and Rangers.
Basically, you need to go 180 degrees the other way. If you don’t, you could offer your services to the witness protection program. Starting next summer, if the Feds need to hide somebody, they can just put them on your air.
