U.S. forward Brian McBride has left Fulham, and is expected to return to MLS. That could mark the end of Fulhamerica, and a huge boost for co-Eastern Conference leaders Chicago and Columbus, with the man known as McHead growing up in the former city and playing in the latter. The 35-year-old striker spent 4 ½ seasons at Fulham, and his header in their penultimate game of the season help ensure they stayed up in the Premiership. He’s scored 40 goals in 150 games for Fulham, and his return from injury helped salvage their season.

“After much consideration with my family, we have decided to leave Fulham after four and a half fantastic years. I have always stated my intention to return to America at some stage and this seems like the right moment in my career to move on,’’ McBride said on the team’s website.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Club, the Chairman, the staff and wonderful fans for all their support, on and off the pitch, during my time at Fulham. I take great pride in the fact that my last appearance for Fulham saw the Club maintain its Premier League status.

“I leave with some wonderful memories from my time at Fulham and the Club will always be in my heart. I would like to wish the Club, Roy Hodgson and my team mates every success for the future.’’

Fulham played in MLS before with the Crew, but grew up in the Chicago area, where he and his wife keep a home. Recent reports have linked him with the Fire, who just drilled the Red Bulls 5-1 this past weekend. Either would have to make moves to acquire him.

Toronto holds the top spot on the allocation list, and Trader Mo is already fielding offers. Chicago doesn’t have a Designated Player slot, so would have to get McHead to play on the cheap or use allocation $ to bring his salary down. Columbus has it’s DP spot open, but what would they give Trader Mo?

Fulham already released defender Carlos Bocanegra, and is expected to lose Kasey Keller as well. That would leave Clint Dempsey and little-used striker Eddie Johnson as the only Americans.
