The Yankees barely held on to a spot in the top 10, thanks only to lousy weeks by the teams surrounding them. The Giants (who were 10th last week) were the first team in the rankings to finish the week above .500.
The Yankees’ 1-5 week dropped them to 10th and the teams below them in the AL East all made up ground. The Mets were also on the rise with a 4-2 week on the road, but it’s up to Mike Pelfrey on Monday night to continue that success.
(Rankings, records based on games through Sunday, May 15)
1. Phillies (25-14) (Previous rank: 1) —Cliff Lee earns his money in the postseason, but it’s worth noting he is 2-3 with a 3.78 ERA so far.
2. Rays (23-17) (2) — Positioned to take the top spot before being outscored 15-3 in their final two games against Orioles.
3. Indians (24-13) (3) — Grady Sizemore’s knee and hard-charging Tigers are two reasons for Cleveland to be concerned.
4. Marlins (23-16) (5) — Javy Vazquez is back in the NL East, but he looks worse than ever.
5. Braves (23-19) (8) — Got clutch starts from Jair Jurrjens and Tim Hudson to take final two from Phillies.
6. Giants (22-17) (10) — One of their World Series heroes, Madison Bumgarner, is 0-6. But his loss was only one of week.
7. Reds (23-17) (12) — In first place after sweep of Cardinals.
8. Tigers (22-18) (17) — Hottest team in baseball has won seven straight and 10 of 11.
9. Royals (20-19) (9) — Had to feel good after taking last two from Yankees, but ran into red-hot Tigers.
10. Yankees (20-18) (4) — Jorge Posada is one of many reasons there’s concern in The Bronx.
11. Cardinals (22-19) (6) — Still searching for bullpen answers; Fernando Salas is fourth closer of season.
12. Angels (22-19) (7) — Must look for power answers elsewhere with Kendry Morales out for season.
13. Red Sox (20-20) (15) — Is there a better way to get back to .500 than sweeping the Yankees in The Bronx?
14. Rockies (20-18) (11) —Ubaldo Jimenez is a shell of the pitcher who started last year 15-1.
15. Rangers (21-19) (14) — Michael Young is handling the move to DH a little better than Posada. The former shortstop and third baseman is hitting .345 with 30 RBIs.
16. Athletics (20-20) (13) — Pitching is good enough to win AL West, but will GM Billy Beane make a move for the bat Oakland desperately needs.
17. Mets (19-21) (21) — Come home with momentum after winning series in Colorado and Houston. Mike Pelfrey has to take ball Monday and beat the Marlins’ Josh Johnson to keep it going.
18. Blue Jays (20-20) (25) — I would like to write about someone besides Jose Bautista, but he hit six more homers — including three Sunday — this week.
19. Orioles (19-20) (23) — Up-and-down Baltimore smells .500 again with sweep of Mariners, series win at Rays.
20. Nationals (19-21) (18) — Remain average in the big leagues, but the best news for the franchise is that Bryce Harper is dominating at Single-A.
21. Brewers (19-21) (24) — Are 33-3 at home against the Pirates since 2007.
22. Dodgers (19-22) (20) — Chad Billingsley threw a one-hitter Saturday, but was losing pitcher against Diamondbacks.
23. Pirates (18-22) (16) — They finally get to .500 this late in the season and promptly drop five straight.
24. White Sox (17-24) (28) — Six-man rotation now that Jake Peavy has returned.
25. Diamondbacks (17-22) (22) — J.J. Putz is nine-for-nine in save opportunities.
26. Cubs (17-21) (26) — Tough to get back over .500 when longest winning streak of season is two.
27. Padres (17-23) (27) — Scored 46 runs this week — 26 more than the Yankees.
28. Mariners (16-23) (19) — Closer Brandon League has four of the six losses during slide.
29. Astros (15-25) (29) — Carlos Lee had his 2,000th hit Saturday.
30. Twins (12-26) (30) — Are usually awful against the Yankees. That has now stretched to rest of league.
