MURDOCK’S IN RIGHT JERSEY
Not even a Net for a day, New Jersey native Eric Murdock has already heard from some old friends.
“I got a couple requests for some season tickets,” Murdock said yesterday.
Having grown up in Somerville, the 6-foot-1, free-agent backup point guard said he’s thrilled to return home, especially having signed a three-year, $5.78 million contract.
“It means a lot knowing I have a lot of support in the crowd,” said the 30-year-old who starred at Bridgewater-Raritan West High before going to Providence.
He has a lot of support from John Calipari, as well. With Sherman Douglas not willing to sign with the team, the Nets’ coach said he thinks Murdock will be a strong backup behind starter Sam Cassell.
“I think he’ll be terrific for us,” he said.
Last season, Murdock played behind Tim Hardaway for the Heat and performed well in the playoffs against the Knicks. It was Murdock who used a slit-throat gesture during a game to show the Knicks they were dead. The maneuver didn’t sit well with the Knicks or their fans.
“Hopefully a lot of Knicks fans won’t be coming to the Nets games,” Murdock said. “I apologized. It was something you probably won’t see again.”
Ironically, Murdock was a Knicks fan growing up.
“The Nets’ organization had been down for so many years, so it was hard to cheer for the Nets,” he said. “I was following guys like Bernard King [on the Knicks]. But the way the [Nets’] organization has turned it around, now you can’t help [but] to jump on the bandwagon.
“I’m happy to be home.”
