One lucky unidentified bettor on track successfully hit Races 3 through 8 at Belmont yesterday. Keyed by 79-1 The Rhymer’snumber, the bettor collected $122,428.
ND RACE – When the field went out on the track for the post parade, Commitment Ring unseated John Velezquez and started bucking down the stretch toward the far turn. She ran all the way to the backstretch, but an excellent job by the outriders prevented the horse from running into the gate. They also prevented her from creating havoc when she turned around and tried running toward the rest of the field. She was a late scratch. Even though she wasn’t favored in the doubles, Regally Appealing took all the late money and drew off in the stretch for the victory. Sugar Miss was up near the pace early but dropped back suddenly when intimidated by Belle Claire entering the far turn. Regent Gold rated early, made wide move around the far turn and flattened out in the stretch.
TH RACE – Prior to the start of the race the track was rated good. If you like playing first-time Lasix horses, come get your money. The Rhymer’snumber, making her first start since a troubled ninth at 100-1 in December, pressed the pace early and held off favored Might Be True to win the off the turf maiden special weight race at 79-1. Might Be True looked to have dead aim but again disappointed in the stretch drive.
TH RACE – The track condition was changed to muddy and California shipper Sovereign M.D. relished the off going. Showing improved early speed, he battled for the lead with Select Session and drew off in the stretch for an easy victory. He is now 3-for-4 lifetime on off tracks. Favored Brilliant Banker rated off the pace and never threatened.
TH RACE – While the late changes were being announced prior to the third race, it was announced that Caramel Custard would race without an aluminum pad. She had run with the pad in her last start and tired badly. Today, she set the pace and drew off in the stretch to an impressive victory. Denver Zephyr rated early and moved toward the leader entering the stretch but was second best.
TH RACE – Platinum Setting made his career debut and basically familiarized himself with almost every path on the track except the rail. At the start he bore out badly, getting very close to the outer rail. Then he stayed wide around the far turn while moving up toward the leaders under right-handed whipping by Shawn Bridgmohan. When Bridgmohan switched to a left-handed whip prior to entering the stretch, the horse reacted and bore out badly. Bridgmohan went back to a right-handed whip to gain control and horse was OK. But then he went back to a left handed whip and the horse tried bearing out each time he got hit left handed. Bridgmohan finally stopped whipping lefthanded and angled the horse inside where he finished third.
