DETROIT – Lou Piniella is set to take over as manager of the Cubs.

Piniella’s name was dragged through the Joe Torre controversy last week, but Cubs GM Jim Hendry has had Piniella targeted all along to manage his club, according to industry sources. Financial details are yet to be worked out but the Cubs and Piniella are expected to hammer out an agreement over the coming week. Piniella took himself out of the running for the Giants job earlier this week.

Piniella has called the Cubs job a “prestige” job. Managing the Cubs has proven to be one of most difficult jobs in baseball, however, and was too much for Dusty Baker to handle. The Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908 and have not even appeared in the World Series since 1945.
