He already has the flash wardrobe for Broadway. The Rangers need Kevin Weekes to look good in blue to solidify their goaltending – their biggest problem position.
They finally completed their signing of the 29-year-old unrestricted free agent yesterday, landing the 6-foot Weekes to upgrade the position where Mike Dunham already resides, and where Don Blackburn is coming back from surgery.
Weekes signed a one-year deal with the Rangers. He played a career-high 66 games for the Hurricanes last season, tied for seventh-most in the league, going 23-30-11 with a 2.33 goals-against average.
The Rangers will be Weekes’ sixth NHL team, having tended goal for Florida, the Islanders, Vancouver, Tampa and Carolina. He and Arturs Irbe teamed to take the ‘Canes to the 2002 Stanley Cup Finals. He owns a 78-136-33 career record and a 2.86 goals against average.
