SARATOGA SPRINGS – Sense of Style, an $800,000 daughter of champion Thunder Gulch, has only run twice in her fledgling career. But after winning her Aug. 1 debut at the Old Spa by 2½ lengths, then thundering home to win yesterday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Spinaway Stakes by 63/4 lengths, she’s already being mentioned as one of the top 2-year-old fillies in recent years.

“She’s a really good filly, isn’t she?” said trainer Patrick Biancone, noted for his French sense of irony, after the race. “She is mature, strong, relaxed, all the qualities. She has quite a future.”

After opening at 2-5 on the tote board, Sense of Style went off the solid 4-5 favorite in a field of seven. She broke alertly, then settled in nicely just off the pace (:22.3, :45.3) set by Portsea under pressure from Classic Elegance, in the clear on the outside under Edgar Prado.

Around the turn, Classic Elegance, winner of the Schuylerville and Debutante her last two starts, began to back up, while Miss Matched moved up to challenge for the lead.

But Prado hadn’t asked Sense of Style to run yet. When he did, she kicked away down the stretch with powerful strides, completing the seven furlongs in a sprightly 1:23.4.

Sense of Style paid $3.90, with Miss Matched outlasting the late run of Play With Fire to complete a $20.60 exacta.
