SPA SET TO HOST OPEN HOUSE
Saratoga Race Course’s 20th Annual Open House will be held Sunday. The Open House marks the unofficial start of the Saratoga racing season, and provides fans a chance to get re-acquainted with the historic racetrack.
Sponsored by NYRA, the Open House runs from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and features a wide variety of family entertainment. Handicapping seminars and free tours of the track are also available.
Silverbulletday was installed as the 6-5 favorite as a field of eight was entered in the Grade 3 $600,000 Delaware Handicap at a mile and a quarter on Sunday. The Bob Baffert trainee is also the starting highweight at 119 pounds and will be ridden for the first time by Shane Sellers.
2ND RACE – After an extremely wide race in Masi Ebina’s U.S. riding debut on June 30 when he finished a fast closing third, Storm Power was made the 6-5 favorite versus this field. He was taken back early but never lifted a hoof as he trailed the field throughout. He may not have liked the turf, which was listed as firm but softened up from slight rain the past couple of days.
4TH RACE – It was a rough start to the race as Wallimar bore out and bothered the four horses to his outside. Then when entering the backstretch, Our Own Boy cut inside while rushing up to gain the lead and forced the four horses to his inside to bear in. The race favorite, Hendler, on the rail took the worse of that and checked soundly. Hendler then slowly got back into contention and put in a good run in the stretch to finish third. He should be tough to handle next out with a clean trip. Stogie Two was bothered when Wallimar bore out but he recovered quickly and rated off the pace. He then split horses turning for home and went on for the victory.
5TH RACE – Slightly Scarlet broke well and set the pace, but when Norberto Arroyo Jr. on Gayle’s Glory realized it was a slow pace, he rushed her up to take the lead entering the backstretch. Gayle’s Glory set soft fractions of :25, :50 and 1:14 4/5 without being pressured by anyone. But on the far turn Riotous Miss made a three wide move to the lead and took the lead after entering the stretch. Gayle’s Glory faded badly in the stretch to finish fourth while Riotous Miss held off the fast closing Sweet Scarlet for the victory. Lipstick Traces stumbled a few steps out of the gate and then was pinched back. She clipped heels and stumbled again but then once she got clear running she finished well to be third.
6TH RACE – Deoneandonly rated off the pace in last early while saving ground. She angled outside to try to get clear run but then cut inside to the rail when a hole opened up. She was moving well and tried to angle outside to avoid the tiring Jessica Rapid but was boxed in by Waitfircindy. Deoneandonly checked slightly and then went through a narrow opening between the rail and Jessica Rapid to continue her run and ended up a fast finishing fourth.
9TH RACE – Race was marred by a spill involving Belong To Rose at the top of the stretch. Belong to Rose had chased the pace and was under a drive turning for home. She took a bad step and then broke down in her left front. Jose Espinoza was sent flying to the ground and was lucky the horse did not roll over on top of him. Mike Luzzi on Law School Tuition was right behind Belong to Rose and swerved out to just miss the fallen horse. Espinoza walked over to the ambulance and was taken to the unsaddling area, where he then walked back to the jocks’ room and then first aid. He was not injured. Belong to Rose was euthanized on the track.
