This week, NYP TV Sports’ Andrew Marchand spoke with CBS NFL Today analyst Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe, 38, played 14 seasons and owns three Super Bowl rings.

Q: What do you know about the Jets’ new coach, Eric Mangini?

A: I don’t really know a whole heck about him.

Normally what happens, if you are a good coach, your first gig is, you go to a bad team. The Steelers and the Patriots, those jobs don’t normally open up to first-year coaches. So he has his work cut out for him.

What people have to understand is that Bill Belichick didn’t do so well his first year in Cleveland. It is trial and error.

You think you know, but you really don’t know until you actually get there.

Q: What type of record do you foresee for the Jets?

A: Honestly, I think they should sip champagne if they go 5-11.

Q: Are the Giants a playoff team?

A: I think they are a playoff team. But they are not going to sneak up on people like they did last year.

Q: What do you think of Eli Manning’s game?

A: I don’t know why Eli’s completion percentage is so low with the weapons he has on offense. They run the ball as good as anyone in the National Football League. Plaxico Burress gave them a 1,200-yard receiver.

Jeremy Shockey is one of the best tight ends in the NFC. So there is no reason his completion percentage shouldn’t be better.

Q: Which brother is a better studio analyst – Shannon Sharpe or Sterling Sharpe?

A: I would probably say he is.

He has been doing it a little longer than I have. We kind of approach it differently. We say the same thing, but we have a different way of getting around to it. I’m more straight to the point. I don’t sugarcoat it. I’m not trying to be anybody’s friend. I’m trying to be as honest about a situation as I possibly can.

It is hard for me because I just stepped out of the game three years ago. He has been away from the game 12-13 years.

So a lot of the guys he is talking about never played with him or against him.
