This week, The Post’s Andrew Marchand spoke with Fox Sports baseball analyst Steve Lyons. The 43-year-old Lyons is in his eighth season. He won a Sports Emmy in 2000 for studio analysis.

Q: What happened between you and Jeff Kent at the World Series last year?

A: My only job during the World Series is to ask three questions of the player of the game. It’s not a huge assignment, but it is what I do and I take it seriously. It is a nice addition to the game.

Kent has a tendency to blow that kind of stuff off. I just thought it was important for him to do it at that time. All of America is watching at that point.

Q: What happened when you spoke to him after he didn’t do the interview?

A: He said, “Don’t take it personally, because I blow everybody off.” Then he continues the conversation and we talk for, I don’t know, maybe 10 minutes in the clubhouse. I had stopped him and asked, “I’ve always shown you the respect as a player.” He said, “Yeah, I guess so.” I said, “I needed some respect from you at the end of that game and you didn’t give it to me.” I wouldn’t say it was a heated argument, but I felt stepped on, I guess.

Q: As a player with the White Sox, you once slid into first, getting a load of dirt in your pants, and then you pulled down your pants down on the field. What happened?

A: There are a certain percentage of people who think I did it on purpose. I absolutely did not. It may have been the best thing that ever happened to me in my career because it is the thing I’m most known for. I wish it wasn’t the thing I was known for. I wish I had hit a game-winning home run in the seventh game of the World Series. But that never happened for me.

Q: What amazes you about that?

A: I find it amazing that people would think I would do that on purpose. It was stupid. It was ridiculous. Whatever other adjective you want to throw in there. I just brain-cramped. I forgot I was still on first base. I could feel the dirt running down my pants. My first instinct was to just get it out of there.

Q: So that annoys you, yes?

A: It annoys me, I guess. I don’t get mad about it, [but] it annoys me that people would say he was joking around or he was looking for extra publicity. It was accidental.
