THE autumn harvest along the Atlantic coast has been nothing short of spectacular with an abundant supply of stripers, porgies, bluefish and sea bass being taken by anglers.
The striper fishing through Wednesday at Montauk was tremendous, with a number of 50-pounders being caught at the Point along with false albacore and bluefish. Sea bass and porgy fishing was also up to snuff at the eastern most point of Long Island. Montauk has been one of the few bright spots for surf fishermen. Some spots around the Lighthouse have seen solid walls of striped bass show in the suds.
Offshore fishing at Block Canyon was also solid, with good numbers of longfin and yellowfin tuna being caught. Hudson Canyon has been even better with bluefin tuna being taken at the Elbow and 100 Square area along with healthy numbers of 50-pound longfin and yellowfin tuna.
This is the time of year when you have to take advantage of every good weather day, as the number of opportunities dwindle even more as we get closer to November.
There continues to be lots of porgies in the Peconics along with bluefish. Orient Point to Gardiner’s offers up very good striper and bluefish action. The blackfishing is just starting to pick up along the North Fork.
The South Shore is seeing lots of striper activity; the problem has been getting under the bluefish. There are bluefish just about everywhere in the Shinnecock area as well as stripers, but they’re mostly at the inlet.
In the New York Bight, it’s just about the same story, tons of bluefish from the Rockaways to Sandy Hook and into the Narrows. All these bluefish could be the main reason why the striper action has been so slow. The porgy fishing at the local reefs has been good for the bottom boats out of Sheepshead Bay and we hear that a number of healthy sized blackfish have been caught as well.
Further east, the Hempstead and McAllister reefs have been holding good numbers of sea bass and porgies while the stripers were caught at Jones Inlet and the local bridges on clam bellies. The bluefish have been out at 17 Fathoms.
Lots of blues feeding on bunkers in the western Sound the past few weeks and they appear to be in all the bays and harbors, especially Eastchester Bay and Hempstead Harbor. Blackfish are starting to be caught at Execution Light, Larchmont and Rye.
