As if two losses weren’t bad enough yesterday, the Mets may have lost two starting players for the short term.
Edgardo Alfonzo was kept out of the doubleheader nightcap because of a left rib-cage strain. Roberto Alomar left the second game in the second inning with a strained right groin. Both players are questionable, at best, for today’s game with the Diamondbacks.
Alfonzo, who hit the go-ahead homer against Arizona in the eighth inning of the opener, strained his left side swinging in the 10th inning of the 8-5 loss.
Before he left the clubhouse after the dismal day, Alfonzo spoke with Bobby Valentine for about five minutes. Asked about the injury, Alfonzo said, “I don’t know. It’s too early to see [if he’ll be available today]. I’ve gotta wait until tomorrow to decide.”
Asked about the disabled list – and the fact that Joe McEwing needed to be DLed because of a similar injury – Alfonzo responded, “I don’t know.”
Valentine said he didn’t know about Alomar’s injury until the lineup cards were exchanged for the nightcap. Alomar was not able to sufficiently stretch out the area by the end of the first inning.
“It was a real tight groin that was getting tighter, and we couldn’t take a chance,” said Valentine, who added Alomar is probably day-to-day.

Valentine decided to play Mike Piazza in the first game, sitting him in the nightcap. Piazza went 1-for-5 with an RBI double.
The manager could have paired Piazza with newcomer John Thomson, who endured a rough Met debut in the nightcap. He chose to delay the eventual first interaction with Thomson.
Piazza was physically capable of catching both games of the doubleheader, Valentine said, but “it’s tomorrow and the next day” that he might feel sluggish.

Rey Ordonez tied his career high with four hits in the first game. Alfonzo passed Cleon Jones and took over fourth place in club history with his 522nd RBI in the opener.
