The Metro Alumni Club otherwise known as the U.S. National Team routed Trinidad & Tobago in last night’s World Cup qualifier, and Jozy Altidore was the star of the show. The 19-year-old ex-Red Bull striker became the youngest American ever with an international hat trick.
In just his fourth international start, the New Jersey-born star tallied in the 13th, 71st and 89th minutes, all off Landon Donovan passes. And after his goal off the bench in Saturday’s 2-2 tie at El Salvador, he has a half-dozen in just nine appearances. Yo, Villarreal, the brother can’t help you?
“It’s pretty cool. Most important is we came out, and the guys rebounded from the El Salvador game, and we made a statement _ made a statement we are one of the teams to be reckoned with in CONCACAF,” said Altidore, who hasn’t played since being loaned out to second-division Xerez.
Coach Bob Bradley saw his U.S. team improve to 2-0-1, leading the final round of CONCACAF qualifying with seven points. His son Michael excelled in central midfield, and keeper Tim Howard kept a clean sheet. All are New Jersey natives and former Metros.
