MET NOTES

PORT ST. LUCIE – Think about a lineup featuring Kaz Matsui, Jose Reyes, Mike Piazza, Cliff Floyd and Alfonso Soriano. The Mets did.

In what would have been a delicious twist to the A-Rod saga, The Post has learned that the Mets attempted to land Soriano, the former Yankee, from the Rangers before being rebuffed.

According to a source familiar with the Mets’ thinking, the Amazin’s called the Rangers this week to inquire about Soriano – but were told he wasn’t available. The teams did not exchange proposals.

If acquired, Soriano likely would have played right field. His acquisition would have been a coup – as the Mets would have picked up a 26-year-old who hit 38 homers and stole 35 bases last season, while at the same time sticking it to their cross-town rivals.

The Mets did acquire another former Yankee yesterday, signing Randy Keisler to a minor-league deal.

Keisler, a left-hander who turns 28 next Tuesday, won’t report to major league spring training, figuring instead to start in the high minors. He pitched in two games with the Padres last year, going 0-1 with a 12.00 ERA. He also pitched in 22 games with Triple-A affiliates of the Padres, Astros and Rangers, going a combined 7-6 with a 4.13 ERA.
