With the NBA preseason just three weeks away, two more longtime Madison Square Garden broadcasting regulars appear to be partially or fully out the door.
John Andariese, a popular Knicks’ radio and/or TV analyst for 27 years, is still without a contract. Spencer Ross, in recent years a near-fulltime backup on Knick radio broadcasts, has been offered a severely restricted role that would render him a third-stringer.
Andariese and Ross, both reached yesterday, preferred not to comment. The Garden confirmed that Ross, a solid and versatile local play-by-player for over 30 years, has been offered a diminished presence. Andariese’s future remains unsettled.
Since Cablevision purchased The Garden, MSG Network, widely considered the nation’s best regional sports network, has been on a steady slide. Among those with impressive credentials who have left – or been pushed out – are Marv Albert, network boss Bob Gutkowski and executive producer Mike McCarthy, whose successor, Leon Schweir, recently resigned.
