LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The superstar Euro-invader Workforce, winner of the English Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, was scratched this morning from today’s $2 million Breeders’ Cup Turf, for which he would have been heavily favored to be the first horse to complete the Arc-BC Turf double.

The connections of Workforce, who was the 7-5 favorite on the morning line, said all week they were concerned about the firm condition of the Churchill Downs turf course, and warned that the son of King’s Best might not run.

After trainer Sir Michael Stoute and owner Prince Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte Farm discussed the matter this morning, they pulled the 3-year-old colt from the race.

“The ground has not gone our way,” said Teddy Grimthrope, Juddmonte’s racing manager. “There has been no rain, and the ground is firmer than we would like.

“We have absolutely no complaints, but the welfare of the horse is paramount. Prince Khalid has always been a great supporter of the Breeders’ Cup, and no one is more disappointed than he.”
