Alfredo Callejas, who retired in 2004 after training horses on the New York circuit for over a quarter-century, died at his home in Florida last Saturday. He was 71.

A native of Argentina, Callejas trained for his friend and countryman, owner Robert Perez. Their top horses included the New York-bred filly Cupecoy’s Joy, winner of the Acorn and Mother Goose in 1982, and Senor Speedy, a sprinter who won multiple graded stakes.

Callejas is survived by his wife, Lillian; sons Bernardo, who trains at Belmont Park, and Claudio, and two grandchildren.
