Based on her victory in the Sept. 5 Glens Falls Handicap at Saratoga over Film Maker, who finished a solid second to world champion Ouija Board in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, trainer Bobby Frankel’s Arvada will be a heavy favorite for today’s Grade 2, $150,000 Long Island Handicap at a mile-and-a-half on turf at Aqueduct.
But given the yielding nature of the grass course – Arvada prefers firm going – and the distance (she was well-beaten in her only try at 12 furlongs last year in France); the 4-year-old, English-bred filly could be vulnerable under highweight of 117 pounds.
Frankel himself admitted, “I didn’t think she was good enough to run with the best fillies and mares [in the Breeders’ Cup]. Even though she beat Film Maker, she was getting a lot of weight from her, nine pounds, and only beat her a half-length.”
If Arvada, with John Velazquez up, isn’t the lock she appears to be, then a trio of 3-year-old Euro-invaders could be her undoing, topped by the French filly Eleusis. Although the daughter of the top sire Diesis is meeting graded stakes company for the first time, she’s 5-for-6, with her only loss coming by a neck. She’s also a proven performer at the distance, and has a fondness for soft ground.
Eleusis, with Jose Santos in the saddle, runs coupled with Noble Stella, a three-length winner going a mile-and-a-half over good going in Italy. She’ll be ridden by Cornelio Velasquez.
The other European, Briviesca, is also dangerous, coming off a victory in her last start going a mile-and-a-half over soft turf in France. Jorge Chavez has the mount.
Today’s co-feature is the Grade 3, $100,000 Turnback the Alarm ‘Cap at a mile-and-an-eighth on the main track for fillies and mares.
Frankel’s Personal Legend, a turf specialist who finished a strong second in her only race on dirt, is the pick to post a mild upset over Todd Pletcher’s Capeside Lady.
