AS THE WORLD TURNS
With just a few weeks remaining until the start of the World Baseball Classic on March 5, it’s time to break down the double-elimination opening round. This week, it’s Pool C, being played in Toronto. (Part 6 in a 7-part series)
CANADA
2006 finish: Eliminated pool play
Key players: 1B Justin Morneau, OF Jason Bay, C Russell Martin
Outlook: The bats are there, but with Blue Jays righty Scott Richmond as the likely staff ace, it will be hard for Canada to advance.
Prediction: 1-2
ITALY
2006 finish: Eliminated pool play
Key players: OF Frank Catalanotto, RHP Mark DiFelice, IF Nick Punto
Outlook: Even hitting coach Mike Piazza can’t make a legit No. 3 hitter out of A’s outfielder Chris Denorfia.
Prediction: 0-2
USA
2006 finish: Eliminated 2nd round
Key players: SS Derek Jeter, RHP Jake Peavy, OF Ryan Braun
Outlook: The pressure’s on Davey Johnson and Team USA after their lackluster showing in ’06. The roster is brimming with All-Stars and the medal round is in Los Angeles. Bronze sounds about right.
Prediction: 3-1
VENEZUELA
2006 finish: Eliminated 2nd round
Key players: IF Miguel Cabrera, RHP Felix Hernandez, OF Magglio Ordonez
Outlook: Johan Santana and Carlos Zambrano withdrawals deprive Venezuelans of chance of winning hardware.
Prediction: 2-1
