MIAMI – According to published reports, Houston general manager Gerry Hunsicker is expected to remove himself from the Mets’ search for a new GM as early as today.

Hunsicker interviewed with the Wilpon family Thursday night and Friday, but it is believed that Hunsicker isn’t comfortable with the job and/or the timing isn’t right, so he will drop out voluntarily.

McLane wanted an answer before the World Series because he wants to give a contract extension to Hunsicker, who is already one of the best-paid GMs in the business, according to one source. The Mets have said they won’t announce a hire until after the Fall Classic.

Also, one person familiar with Hunsicker’s situation said the media coverage rattled him, especially when he was portrayed negatively in some parts.
