BARELY MADE GRADE
Jet Report Card
QUARTERBACK: C
Chad Pennington (14-of-24, 143, INT) wasn’t at his best. Miscommuni cated on first-half INT.
RUNNING BACKS: B+
Curtis Martin (24-for-110, 1 TD rushing, 4-31 receiving) was again the Jets’ horse, grinding out tough yards against the Miami defense. Jerald So well (3-18 receiving) had a strong outing, blocking for Martin and in pass protection.
WIDE RECEIVERS: C
With the Miami defense taking away Santana Moss (1-17), Wayne Chrebet (3-48) had some opportuni ties. Justin McCareins had one catch.
TIGHT ENDS: C+
Anthony Becht caught his first pass of the season for no gain, but he had a big game blocking and helping to keep Miami’s pass rush at bay. Chris Baker had a catch for 15 yards.
OFFENSIVE LINE: B
Kevin Mawae did a remarkable job snapping with his left hand because of fractured right finger. Overall, a good job of blocking for Martin and a decent job of protecting Pennington, although he was sacked three times.
DEFENSIVE LINE: A
John Abraham had four tackles, two sacks, a batted pass, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Not a bad day’s work. Jason Ferguson had four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Shaun Ellis, Dewayne Robertson and Bryan Thomas chipped in.
LINEBACKERS: B+
Jonathan Vilma led the team with eight tackles. Victor Hobson had two tackles, several pressures, an INT and another pass defensed. Eric Barton had a sack, a fumble recovery and three tackles.
SECONDARY: B
There was some loose coverage, but Donnie Abraham’s TD off an INT was the difference- maker.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C
A stalemate. Santana Moss set up the first Jets TD with a 24-yard punt return, but averaged only 8.7 yards on three returns. Coverage teams held Miami in check.
KICKING GAME: B+
Doug Brien kicked a key 53-yard FG, his longest as a Jet and longest ever on grass. Toby Gowin had three punts inside the 20.
COACHING: B
Good, aggressive defensive game plan by Donnie Henderson. Herman Edwards deserves credit for keeping his players hungry. Offensive coordinator Paul Hackett went a bit conservative after the Pennington INT.
