Amadou Sidibe, Cardinal Hayes’ workmanlike 6-foot-8 power forward, plans to take his time when comes to picking a school. Unlike many of the city’s other top rising seniors, he doesn’t plan to sign or commit early – Sidibe said the spring is very likely and he has yet to even cut down a list from 20 mid-major scholarship offers.
He recently took unofficial visits to Hofstra, Marist and Monmouth and will see Drexel and Temple this week with Hayes teammate Jalen Jenkins. Sidibe has also been to Fordham, whom he committed to as a sophomore, and Yale.
“I want to go somewhere I know I can contribute, I know I can fit and it’s a good social fit, too,” he said during Sunday’s Battle of the Boroughs at Gauchos Gym in The Bronx.
Of all his visits, Sidibe said Hofstra stood out the most.
“I liked Hofstra a lot,” he said. “It has a nice campus, everything there seems to be new.”
Obekpa’s recruiting on the rise: The Nigeria-born shot-blocking specialist who attends Our Savior New American on Long Island continues to pick up high-major offers. Connecticut joined Georgia Tech, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Cincinnati and Memphis, the 6-foot-8 forward said. He will take unofficial visits to St. John’s and Georgia Tech this week.
Thomas make move down south: Jevon Thomas, the former St. John’s commit, has opted to leave Our Savior New American for Quality Education in North Carolina. The smooth, 6-foot point guard recently picked up offers from Seton Hall, Towson and Penn State while Virginia has recently shown interest. Thomas went to see Seton Hall this week and enjoyed his time at the New Jersey school.
“I like the coaching staff, it’s a good school,” he said. “It’s a small campus, which is what I need. I like the offense they run and I can contribute right away.”

He recently tripped to Virginia Tech and plans to narrow down his list this week. … Lincoln transfer Tafari Whittingham, an athletic 6-foot-6 wing from Connecticut, recently visited Hofstra and holds additional offers from Siena, Robert Morris and Iona. He plans to commit during the late signing period in the spring. … South Shore point guard Terrence Samuel will visit Iowa State next weekend and plans to see Penn State, VCU and Pittsburgh, who have all offered, sometime in September. … Wings Academy combo guard Justin Jenkins will go to St. Peter’s on Thursday. … Bronx native Da’Shawn Suber is leaving St. Patrick (N.J.) and will attend either South Kent (Conn.), Lincoln or Montrose Christian (Md.). … Former Boys & Girls swingman Jeffland Neverson is headed for Vermont Academy and has picked up interest from Providence, St. Joseph’s University, Hofstra and Georgia Tech. … Former Thomas Jefferson forward Edson Avila will do a postgraduate year at NIA Prep in Newark, N.J., joining Robeson’s Darrel Lucky, Jefferson teammate Tyquan Goodlett and Thomas Edison’s Cavon Baker.
