After on-loan David Beckham set up two goals in AC Milan’s 3-0 rout of Lazio, the Italian giants admitted they were “desperate” to keep him. That has to be sweet music to the ears of MLS and the Galaxy, because whether they want to sell or no, I’d think they’d be happy to take advantage of Milan’s desperation.

Beckham has been a cash cow for L.A. and the league, so if Milan want to keep him at the San Siro past March 9, they’ll likely have to give up the farm. If adding the England skipper to the UEFA Cup squad didn’t tip their hand, team VP Adriano Galliani’s gushing praise did.

“We’re desperate to sign him and I will keep hoping until the last possible moment,” said Galliani. “When he first came to us I thought he would do well but I never thought to such a degree. It would be terrible to lose him so we’ll make little overtures to try to keep hold of him and then our fans can have a great party when Beckham stays.”

I’d have to think that’ll be an expensive party, fees paid straight to MLS. The league didn’t seem to taken by an initial $6 million offer, and the benchmark seems to be Jozy Altidore’s league-record $10 million move from Red Bull last season.

In the five games since the 33-year-old Beckham joined AC MIlan, he has two goals, they’re undefeated, and his influence has been obvious. He’s also played with a passion and fire and work rate that Galaxy fans can only remember fondly.
