BIG BLUE BUTTERS UP BURRESS
Finally, he arrived. Plaxico Burress yesterday afternoon got to Giants Stadium from his home in Miami and commenced with some socializing. He met the coaching staff and last night was taken to dinner at Smith & Wollensky in Manhattan. Now the trick is to get him signed and put him in a Giants uniform.
“I think the Giants want to get something done today,” a person from the Burress camp said yesterday.
That won’t happen just yet. Today, Burress talks football and takes a physical and only after that a deal will get done if the sides can come to agreeable financial terms.
Burress postponed a scheduled visit on Monday, saying he had the flu, but made it to New Jersey this time. Despite concerns about his attitude and the fact his production rarely matches his potential, Burress, 27, is a talent and would move immediately into the starting lineup, replacing released Ike Hilliard oppo site Amani Toomer, who has the most receiving yards (6,813) in franchise history. It would be the capper of a busy and eye-opening offseason in which the Giants signed a starting middle linebacker (Antonio Pierce), a starting right tackle (Kareem McKenzie), a backup quarterback (Jim Miller) and a kicker (Jay Feely).
“I think they’re making all the right offseason moves,” Miller told The Post. “Now to target a great wide receiver would definitely help out the offense to give Eli [Manning] some weapons to work with. He can bring a lot to a team. You always want to have impact players and Plaxico is a guy who can do that. He’s got a ton of talent and is obviously someone we would love to have on our team.”
Burress is seeking a deal similar to the one Mushin Muhammad received from the Bears, which was a six-year, $30 million package that included a signing bonus of $12 million. Soon enough, it became evident that wasn’t going to happen. The Giants were thinking more in line with a multi-year package averaging $5 million per year, with a bonus of $4 million. Yesterday, Burress’ agent Michael Harrison told ESPN.com that he might even consider a one-year deal in order to have Burress pump up his value this season and again hit the open market in 2006.
