BALTIMORE — Eight of the nation’s top riders will compete today in the first Jockey Challenge at Pimlico. It consists of four races: the third, fifth, seventh and 10th on a 13-race card that includes the 85th running of the Grade 2, $150,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at 1 miles.

Hall of Famers Kent Desormeaux and Mike Smith, last year’s Eclipse Award-winner, Garrett Gomez, and Rafael Bejarano, Javier Castellano, Ramon Dominguez, Julien Leparoux and Mario Pino can accumulate points for finishing first (12), second (six), third (four) and fourth (three) in each race. The winner receives $14,000, with $10,000 for second and $8,000 for third. The other riders will receive $3,500.

The Maryland Jockey Club is donating $5,000 to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund, and there will be an autograph session with the riders before the races.

In the Black-Eyed Susan, to be run as the 12th race with a post time of 5:50 p.m., Casanova Move looks like the one to beat. Based at the Belmont Park barn of Jimmy Jerkens, the daughter of Langfuhr is making her first start since finishing second to Justwhistledixie in two straight Grade 2 stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Florida Oaks winner Don’t Forget Gil, second last out in the Comely at Aqueduct; Hooh Why, who took the Grade 1 Ashland at Keeneland; and Payton d’Oro, riding a three-race winning streak for trainer Larry Jones, provide the major opposition.
