THE FRONT cover of the latest issue of ESPN, the Magazine reads, “Special Report: Turning A Blind Eye To Steroids. The Inside Story of Baseball’s Open Secret.”

Fascinating. After all, ESPN has long turned a blind eye to its own inside steroid story while both ignoring, and thus abetting, an open steroid secret.

For years, ESPN has contracted to present – often several times per week – the “World’s Strongest Man Competition,” an event so lousy with steroids that, as Sports Illustrated reported, its participants don’t even bother to deny it.

WSM events are now typically held in places – such as Zambia and Malta – where the authorities, in exchange for the business, are expected to look the other way … if they look at all.

If there is a blind eye to be opened, ESPN doesn’t need the cooperation of Interpol, the DEA, Congress, MLB or the MLBPA to end this open steroid secret. ESPN can put its money where its cover story is and simply refuse to renew the “World’s Strongest Man Competition.”
