BIG BOATS, small boats and everything in between will be on hand for the Atlantic City Boat and Yacht Show to be held at The Convention Center from Thursday through Monday.

Besides the wide array of boats that range from 10 to 55 feet, and the accessories that go with them, the youngest of anglers will have their very own world of fishing at the hands-on interactive Kids’ Fishing Clinics.

These clinics, to be held Saturday and Sunday, will teach children all of the most important facts of selecting tackle, knot tying, anglers’ ethics, casting, as well as discussions on marine life. Upon completion, pre-registered children will receive a rod, reel, tackle and goody bag (while supplies last) to take home. There is free admission to the clinics and the boat show for one child participant and one accompanying adult.

For the adults, the Recreational Fishing Alliance will present fishing seminars covering tips of the trade, various types of fishing, and fishing gear. Show hours are: Thurs. and Fri. 1-9 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sun. 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Mon. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. For information on the show or the above clinics call (800) 940-7642.

Now that the trout season is underway on Long Island, New York’s Dept. of Environmental Conservation will be conducting its fourth Spring Freshwater Fishing Festival Saturday, at Belmont Lake State Park, located off Exit 38 on the Southern State Parkway.

Those attending will have the opportunity to fish as well as participate in fly fishing instruction, bass fishing demonstrations as well as general fishing classes; activities will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The chances of catching a fish will be high since the lake will be stocked with almost 2000 rainbow, brown and brook trout from the hatchery system and from the Connetquot River Fish Hatchery. The lake also has a good supply of yellow perch.

This spring, the DEC will stock 27 ponds and streams in Nassau and Suffolk County. For more information on the Festival or stocking locations, contact the DEC Bureau of Fisheries at (631) 444-0280.

While the weather has put anglers in a fishing frame of mind, turkey hunters have been heading toward the Catskills and other destinations in preparation for the May 1 opener of New York’s spring turkey hunting season.

Scouting is as much a part of turkey hunting as it is for deer hunting, even more so. To help hunters gain a better understanding of this craft bird, Chuck Tiranno, Mark Grieco and other members of the Knight and Hale pro team will present a turkey hunting seminar at the Friar Tuck Wing and Clay Club in Catskill, N.Y., Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Topics will include scouting, turkey calls, tactics, guns and ammunition as well as one-hour field trip. Registration, which includes breakfast and lunch, is $25. There is also an overnight package available for $100. For registration and information, call Dick Nelson at (800) 832-7600, Ext. 447.
