Maybe George Steinbrenner was counting in dog years. Or maybe the history major at Williams College could use a little brush up of his researching techniques.

But in the course of saying the World Series is just the World Series, whether it be against the Padres or the Mets, the Yankee owner couldn’t help himself.

“The [Mets] have been in seven World Series in 38 years and we have missed being in seven in 38,” said Steinbrenner. “You can look that up.”

Uh, in what book? This is the Yankees 10th World Series appearance since the Mets were born in 1962, and the Mets’ fourth.

Asked for further clarification, The Boss said: “That was just something somebody told me. Look it up. It will give you something to do.”
