Riverdale seems to thrive under the pressures of overtime.

“They might like it,” coach TJ Barnett said. “It’s not too much fun for me.”

The fourth-seeded Falcons won two of their three chances during the regular season and found themselves headed to extra time against rival No. 3 Horace Mann and again came out on top.

Mark Bugas scored his only goal of the game from the top off a pass from Neil Hamamoto with less than two minutes left in the second overtime to give host Riverdale an 8-7 win over the Lions in the NYSAISAA boys lacrosse quarterfinals Sunday morning. Riverdale visits top-seeded Rye Country Day, which beat Trinity, 8-2, in its quarterfinal, at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.

“He has really stepped up on the offensive side,” Barnett said of Bugas. “Since we lost one of our attackmen [Will Hendrickson] to injury he has really picked up his goal scoring and is now one of our top three goal scorers.”

Riverdale (11-5) led 3-1 early, but found itself in a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way. Zander Berlinski, who had three goals and an assist, put the Falcons up 7-6 in the fourth. Horace Mann tied the score at 7 with 5:00 left in the game. Goalie Chris Schuster made 27 saves, including two late in regulation.

Defender Sampson Tann also stepped in front of a shot to help send the game to overtime. Hamamoto had a goal and four assists and Marcus Landers scored twice. Max Fikke scored three times and Chris Callegazi had two for Horace Mann (11-8). The two teams split their regular-season meetings with Horace Mann wining the most recent 7-1 on March 12.

“It shows we never give up and we believe in each other,” Barnett said. “I told them I don’t need a hero, I need a team and a team showed up.”

Fieldston 9, Poly Prep 8: Zack Brown scored the Eagles’ first three goals and then put in the eventual winner with 7:34 left in the fourth in the NYSAISAA quarterfinals. Max Goupit tallied his third goal to pull Poly Prep within 9-8 with less than four minutes to play in the game. The Blue Devils (10-5), who won both regular-season meetings, could not convert numerous chances over the final two minutes.

“He was a man among boys today,” Fieldston coach Keith Bergin said of Brown, who missed the beginning of the year with a fracture in his ankle.

Nate Bram and Tanner Morris each scored two goals. Michael Guba dished out two assists and Sean Fosse’s goal gave Fieldston the lead for good at 4-3 in the second quarter. Eagles goalie Daniel Locker made 15 saves. The Eagles visit No. 2 Hackley at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the semifinals.
