STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State coach Joe Paterno was born in Brooklyn in 1926, and although he’s called this college town home since 1950, he’ll always think of himself as a New Yorker.

Paterno was asked by The Post yesterday his thoughts on today’s 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

“I don’t think there’s anybody in this country that is old enough to know what’s going on doesn’t have some memories of what happened,” he said. “We were in there having a staff meeting, we were playing Virginia that Saturday. [Assistant coach] Mike McQueary came in and said, ‘Hey they just bombed the trade centers.’ … I thought he was kidding until, obviously, when I saw what happened.

“I’m a New Yorker. I loved my time down there. You don’t forget those things, obviously. I think you go on with your life and you try to appreciate it. [You ask] why are those happening? What can be done to avoid them if you can? And go from there.”
