Bud Selig claimed he’s never seen this much playoff excitement during his lifetime, and the commissioner of baseball was hopeful the Marlins’ late October run will eventually sustain the South Florida franchise.
“It makes you feel pretty good,” Selig said of the thrilling postseason. “And if you think about it, it really started the first two or three months of the season.
“Then you had those great wild-card races and those great playoff races. There’s nothing that beats high drama.
“This is the best game in the world. Only this game could produce what you’ve watched the last five weeks.”
Selig, who spoke briefly with reporters behind the batting cage before Game 6, argued the high drama and improved television ratings are part of a major trend.
“I’ve believed in the last year or two we’re in the midst of a renaissance,” Selig said. “And I have a lot of statistics to prove that.
“We’ve got to continue to work hard, we’ve got to continue to do a lot of things. This is not a time to be overconfident. But this sport is more popular today than it’s ever been.”
Selig spent Friday afternoon scrutinizing the recent television ratings, which have improved dramatically from recent postseasons.
“In a day when every other major American sports property has gone down, Fox is up over 40 percent,” he said. “The only word I can use is stunning.”
