The video camera that will be trained on Vyjack’s stall at Churchill Downs before the May 4 Kentucky Derby was proposed by his trainer, Rudy Rodriguez, rather than a condition set down by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, according to his attorney, Karen Murphy. This contradicts Internet reports following Rodriguez’ appearance before the KHRC on Tuesday which said that Rodriguez’ license was contingent on the 24/7 video monitoring of his Derby contender.
“We’re the ones that recommended the camera, which (the commission) embraced,” Murphy said. “Whether they imposed it on us or not, we were going to put in the camera. That’s Rudy’s protocol (in his barns at Aqueduct). It’s not a burden, we’re happy to have it.
“My question is, now that (the KHRC) figured out it’s a good idea to watch Vyjack, why not watch the other 19 (Derby) horses? We hope all the horses have cameras on them.”
Rodriguez, who recently served a 20-day suspension for two positives dating from last year for the anti-inflammatory medication Banamine, was questioned by the KHRC Licensing Committe about another of his horses who tested positive for Banamine several weeks ago. Murphy said she is “100 percent certain” that an intruder slipped into Rodriguez’ barn at Aqueduct and “got to” the filly Majestic Marquet, who won the eighth race at the Big A on March 10.
Fliers in English and Spanish have been distributed around the New York racetracks offering a $50,000 reward, put up by Rodriguez’ owners, “for information leading to the identification of the person or persons who are responsible for tampering with the filly Majestic Marquet.” There is an anonymous tip line – 877-308-8454 – and Murphy said a private investigator is conducting interviews on the backstretch of Aqueduct.
