The Jim Campbell-trained entry of Whatanartist and Armbro Animate drew posts four and six, respectively, and has been made the 9-5 favorite for Saturday’s $1 million Meadowlands Pace.
Whatanartist’s 1:49 performance was the fastest elimination in the 27 years of the Meadowlands Racetrack’s signature event.
“I knew the horse was capable of going fast, I really wasn’t paying much attention to the teletimer; I was just mostly concerned about getting qualified,” said Campbell.
“I was not that surprised because the horse does have a lot of talent and a lot of high speed,” said Whatanartist’s driver, Brian Sears.
Armbro Animate, who finished second in his elimination to Allamerican Theory, will be piloted by Jim Campbell’s brother, John.
John Campbell, who has only been back driving part-time for about three weeks since an accident in March, is looking for a record eighth Pace victory and his 21st $1 million win.
Allamerican Theory (post 9, 9-2), trained by Des Tackoor, will be driven by Mike Lachance, since his elimination- winning driver David Miller opted for No Pan Intended (post 3, 5-1).
“Mike Lachance is someone that’s been there before, someone that’s a Hall of Famer, someone that’s won million-dollar races and he was available, so that was our obvious choice,” said Tackoor.
The field is rounded out by The Globe (Luc Ouellette, post 1, 12-1), Yankee Cruiser (Dean Magee, post 2, 7-2), Dream Wave (Jim Morrill, Jr., post 5, 15-1), Mt Vernon Hanover (Chris Christoforou, post 7, 15-1), Quarter Carat (Daniel Dube, post 8, 12-1) and Boulder Creek (Mike Saftic, post 10, 10-1).
The race, the seventh on Saturday’s 13-race card, will go off at approximately 9:45 p.m.
