ALBANY – The rooming list for training camp usually contains few surprises. Players sharing the same position often gravitate to one another, and fast friends from years past make sure they’re paired for the month-long stay at the University at Albany.

Then there’s this grouping at Giants camp: Luke Petitgout, Frank Ferrara and Jeremy Shockey. Connect the dots, if you dare.

“Nobody knows the real person, what a guy’s like, unless you’re close friends,” Petitgout said.

What a trio. There’s Shockey, a walking, talking edgy reality show, the toast of the town and a burgeoning superstar tight end caught in a swirl of controversy. There’s Petitgout, the farmboy left tackle from Delaware whose quiet demeanor belies a sly sense of humor. Then there’s Ferrara, the New Yawker from Staten Island who dabbles as a stunt double in movies and projects a Rockylike aura as he continues to battle for a spot on the defensive line.

“My room’s a whole bunch of millionaires,” Ferrara said. “Then there’s me.”

The three share a suite that includes three bedrooms, a kitchen and a common living room. Petitgout always had roomed with other offensive linemen, but buddies Dusty Zeigler (retired) and Mike Rosenthal (signed by the Vikings) departed. Petitgout and Ferrara were workout partners this past off-season, and Shockey and Ferrara often trained together at Giants Stadium. Oil and water blended with the sweat produced from hard work.

“Shockey’s like, ‘Frank, why don’t you room with me and Luke?’ ” Ferrara said. “Luke was a little hesitant because he thought me and Shock would be at each other because of our personalities, but it wound up working out cool. They’re both good guys.”

Petitgout said of his roommates, “They’re just the guys I feel I can relate to the most.”

Some nights, Shockey will take out his pushup bar and a contest will commence, with Shockey usually the winner. Or Jeff Hatch, a young offensive lineman, will come downstairs with his dumbbells and a curling competition gets started. Shockey will bark at Ferrara about not being able to block him, and Ferrara will answer back.

“Sometimes we get a little crazy, in each other’s faces, like, ‘Yeah, you can’t block me; no, you can’t,’ whatever,” Ferrara said, “and then you go to bed. Luke gets in there, too. He doesn’t speak very much, but he’s not an angel, let me tell you that. He’s like a silent assassin.”

Ferrara said his best roommate was Christian Peter, who once advised him, “Never, ever room with an offensive player,” a warning Ferrara did not heed. He and Shockey are two of the most combustible players on the team, a city guy and country guy linked by the ability to emotionally overload at any moment.

“We have a great time,” Ferrara said. “Young kid. He’s energetic, he’s cool.”

It hasn’t taken long for habits to form.

“Frank’s like Cosmo Kramer on ‘Seinfeld,’ ” Petitgout said. “I go in the bathroom, ‘Frank, where’s my toothpaste?’ He’s like, ‘Ohhhh, it’s in the car, I had to borrow it.’ I ask, ‘Where’s the mouthwash?’ He says, ‘Ohhh, here it is.’ He comes in and steals everything.”

The firestorm created by Shockey after a series of outrageous comments and quotes shook the Giants for a few days and made its way back to the dorm.

“We’ll watch TV and his picture will be on ESPN, and he’ll be like, ‘Turn it, turn it, turn it,’ ” Petitgout said. “His comments, they weren’t meant to hurt anybody, he was just having fun. He doesn’t want any trouble, he just wants to play football, he just wants to win.”

Spoken like a true and loyal roommate.

Three of a kind
