CARMINE’S A LEGEND
When Monticello Raceway hosts the “Battle of the New York Legends” on Sunday, many of the drivers may be seeing red.
Carmine Abbatiello and his trade mark red silks, which garnered him the nickname “The Red Man,” is returning to the Mighty M where he was the top driver in 1960 and ’62.
After leaving the Catskills, the Staten Island native added titles at Freehold, Roosevelt and Yonkers on his way to a national crown in 1978 and induction into the Harness Hall of Fame in 1985.
In the early ’90’s, when Abbatiello chose to take it easy in Florida, he ranked second to Herve Filion in career dash wins. His 7,170 victories currently rank him 13th.
Abbatiello, 67, is looking forward to having fun and catching up with some old familiar faces, but his competitors may be the ones playing catch up because “The Red Man” has always liked it on the front end.
And if you think the bright red may have gotten a little rusty, Abbatiello had this to say.
“I know I’m not. I’m in the bike every day going about 20 miles. I’m not rusty.”
