JET NOTES

PHILADELPHIA – For what Herman Edwards called “precautionary” reasons, receivers Wayne Chrebet and Laveranues Coles were held out of last night’s game and didn’t dress.

Chrebet didn’t play because of back spasms and Coles sat out because of a bruised shoulder. Edwards said if last night was a regular-season game both players would have played.

In their respective places, Windrell Hayes and Matthew Hatchette started.

Jets’ rookie RB LaMont Jordan looked at times like a man amongst boys running the ball, gaining 86 yards on 15 carries for a 5.7-yard per carry average. Jordan gained 76 of those yards in the third quarter alone, highlighted by a 33-yard gain around right end.

A short time afterward, though, Jordan put a scare into the Jets when he lay on the ground writhing in pain after a carry. He came out of the game with what the Jets described as “slightly bruised ribs” and did not return . . . Rookie DT James Reed, who started last night, suffered a pinched nerve in his neck in the fourth quarter and did not return.

Jets’ DE Mike Cecere, a New Jersey native, continued to impress the coaches last night with two more sacks, his third and fourth of the preseason . . . S Nick Ferguson had a fourth-quarter INT. CB Tony Scott had an INT in the second quarter and then fumbled it away. LB Dax Strohmeyer had a sure INT bounce off his chest, and CB Ray Mickens also dropped one in the second quarter.

*

Rookie free agent LB Kelvin Moses, who’s had the slight edge to win the fifth linebacker spot on the roster, was excused from last night’s game to be with his family following the death of his grandmother.

*

For the fourth consecutive preseason game, Tommy Parks was the Jets punter. The difference last night, though, was that he also served as K John Hall’s holder.

*

The Jets must make their final cutdown by 4 p.m. Sunday, so last night’s game was a last hurrah for a number of players. The team must cut from the 68 it has on the roster now to 53 . . . The Jets are off today, will practice tomorrow and be off Sunday before beginning first regular-season work week Monday in preparation for the Sept. 9 opener against the Colts at Giants Stadium.
