LONDON — Chelsea will make a third offer for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric early next week, with a bid of $49 million (£30 million), Sky Sports reported Sunday, quoting sources.

Last season’s England Premier League runner-up already failed this summer with offers of £22 million and £27 million for the Croatian playmaker.

But new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas apparently views Modric as an integral part of his plans for remodeling his squad at Stamford Bridge and was refusing to give up.

Earlier in the summer, Modric claimed that Tottenham told him it would listen to offers from “big clubs” when he signed a new long-term contract last year and as a consequence believes he has been mistreated.

It was reported at the beginning of preseason that he requested a transfer.

But White Hart Lane chairman Daniel Levy has remained adamant that the 25 year old will not be sold, and Spurs manager Harry Redknapp is equally keen to keep the former Dinamo Zagreb star in his squad as he plots a return to the UEFA Champions League.Read more: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,,11668_7086190,00.html
