CHIEFS LAKE WINS MIKE LEE
Chiefs Lake took command at the top of the stretch and drew off to win the $107,700 Mike Lee Stakes by 31/4 lengths. Stunt Man was second and Dr. Vs Magic was a half-length back in third. Garrett Gomez rode the Steve Asmussen trainee to victory, running the seven furlongs in 1:23.14. Chiefs Lake will now be pointed to the $150,000 New York Derby at Finger Lakes on July 14. If he can win that race and the $150,000 Albany at Saratoga on Aug. 22, his owner, Vinery Stables, will receive a $250,000 bonus for sweeping the OTB Big Apple Triple.
Despite spotting competition from 3 to 7 pounds, Accountforthegold easily handled this field of state-breds, as he drew off to an 91/4-length victory in the $69,500 Gander Stakes. Mike Luzzi rode the Gary Contessa trainee, who ran the mile and a sixteenth in 1:40.53, a second off the track record.
3RD RACE – On paper it was a two horse race and they ran that way, as favored Callmetony and Anew battled with each other from start to finish. Anew set the pace with Callmetony pressuring throughout on the outside. In deep stretch Callmetony edged away for the victory.
4TH RACE – Favorites had won the first three races, but chalk players got beat bad as The Ag was never a serious threat and faded to sixth. Glamour Star stalked the pace, made an outside move on the turn to gain the lead and then easily held off Bella Attrice for the victory.
5TH RACE – Longshot players got a run for their money as Court and Spark made a five wide move on the far turn and was making a strong run for the lead in the stretch drive. Edgar Prado on Magical Mona saw Court and Spark finishing full of run and asked “Mona” for a little extra effort nearing the wire. “Mona” responded and barely held off Court and Spark for the victory. Favored Classic Flirt was hard used early battling for the lead with City in the Clouds and faded to be sixth.
9TH RACE – Defrizz set the pace while getting pressure from A Wild Minute. Defrizz put away the longshot but faced a new challenge from Bruce Tickets. Defrizz dug in gamely and both horses battled to the wire, with Bruce Tickets getting up in time for the victory. Longshot Beneath the Crown finished full of run and got up to be third at 34-1.
