Cardinal Hayes has been the surprise of the city this season and the train kept rolling Friday night.
Fairfield-bound big man Amadou Sidibe had 17 points and Shavar Newkirk and Mustafa Jones each had 10 points to lead Hayes to a 78-45 rout of Monsignor Farrell in CHSAA Class AA boys basketball on Staten Island.
Farrell isn’t a title contender by any means, but Hayes has not stumbled even a little in games it is supposed to win. The key to this point, coach Joe Lods said, has been balance.
“When we’re playing really unselfish, we’ve been very good,” he said on the ride home from Staten Island.
Cardinal Hayes has already beaten St. Raymond this year and Saturday it’ll have a chance for another huge signature win when it hosts two-time defending PSAL Class AA city champion Boys & Girls at 4 p.m.
“We jump in the deep end of the pool tomorrow,” Lods said. “We’ll see if we can swim. It’s gonna be fun.”
Mount St. Michael 61, Fordham Prep 48: Ed Correa had 21 points, Anthony Maestre added 14 points and Andrew Utate and Malik Gill each chipped in 11 for Mount (15-3, 6-2 ‘AA’). Fordham Prep is 3-12, 0-8.
Xaverian 76, St. Francis Prep 52: Brian Bernardi poured in 23 points and Dillon Burns had 20 points to lead Xaverian (12-5, 5-3 ‘AA’). Andrew Winter had 15 points and Gabriel Gonzales had 10 points for St. Francis Prep (7-11, 1-6).
