Two days after No. 2 Christ the King was shocked by Archbishop Molloy, Bishop Loughlin, the No. 3 team in The Post’s New York City boys basketball rankings, found itself on the verge of a second major upset.
But the Lions rallied from a five-point deficit in the final minute of the fourth quarter, beating host Holy Cross, 74-66, in overtime at William J. O’Meara Memorial Gym Sunday afternoon.
With his team trailing 59-54 with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Jayvaughn Pinkston went 1-of-2 from the foul line and, after a Holy Cross turnover, the Villanova-bound forward completed a 3-point play to cut the Lions deficit to 59-58 with 20 seconds remaining in regulation.
Holy Cross sophomore Will Davis knocked down a pair of free throws with 11.8 seconds left to put the Knights in front, 61-58, but Branden Frazier (18 points) buried a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Pinkston scored a game-high 22 points and Davonte Dunham added 14 for Loughlin (11-1, 3-0), which trailed 41-29 at the half, but netted the first 12 points of the third quarter to get even.
Evan Conti had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Jahleel Felix and Will Davis scored 15 points apiece and Marcus Hopper added 12 points and 13 boards for Holy Cross, which fell to 9-3, 1-1
Christ the King 69, Xaverian 58: Maurice Barrow had 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, Kareem Thomas had 15 points and five assists, Corey Edwards added 14 points, five rebounds and five assists and Omar Calhoun had 14 points and four assists to lead Christ the King (7-2, 2-1 AA-Brooklyn/Queens) Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn. Brian Bernardi scored a game-high 18 points and Justin Exum added 17 points for Xaverian, which fell to 3-5, 0-3 in the division.
Iona Prep 82, Regis 54: Sandro Carissimo was 7-of-7 from 3-point range, scoring a game-high 22 points, back from a two-game suspension Brian Voelkel had 21 and Ben Borsellino added 16 for Iona Prep (10-2, 5-0 A-North) Sunday afternoon in Manhattan. Rob Mohen had 20 points, Dan Morris had 11 and Jamie Stark added 10 for Regis, which fell to 5-8, 2-4 in the division.
St. Peter’s 63, Monsignor Farrell 38: Stefan Bock and Kevin Driscoll scored 12 points apiece and Trevor Sykes added nine for St. Peter’s (11-2), which outscored Farrell, 22-7, in the third quarter to cruise past the Lions Sunday afternoon. Garrett Dowd had 11 points and Anthony Keane added 10 for the Lions, which fell to 4-11.
Monsignor McClancy 49, Nazareth 41: Calvin Lewis scored 15 points and Patrick Modzelewski added 14 for McClancy (7-6, 6-0 A-South) Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn. Nazareth fell to 4-9, 1-4 in the division.
All Hallows 55, Archbishop Stepinac 50: Michael Alvarado had a game-high 29 points to lead All Hallows (4-6) in a non-league game Friday night. Kadeem Francis had 12 points and Rich Whitten added 10 for Stepinac, which fell to 7-5.
St. Agnes 49, Monsignor Scanlan 46: Hamo Nikocevic had 15 points and Kerry Weldon added 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead St. Agnes (4-9) Friday. Scanlan fell to 1-6.
